JAG students attend Leadership Academy

Nevada students meet with peers, legislators in D.C.

Eight JAG Nevada student leaders attended the Jobs for America’s Graduates National Student Leadership Academy in Washington, D.C., December 5 – 7, 2024. The young student leaders were able to network with peers, attend training and workshops with JAG National Leaders, meet with legislators and tour the nation’s capital.

Students who attended were Jayden and Samantha, from Rancho High School, Las Vegas; Rapheal and Juri from Legacy High School, Las Vegas; Katya and Wesley, from Galena High School in Reno; Mia from Centennial High School, Las Vegas; and Stella Rae from Douglas County High School in Minden.

Legislators and staff were eager to greet the young leaders, who used the meetings to advocate for educational and workforce development opportunities for Nevada youth. Among the legislators who greeted our students were Nevada’s Congressional Representatives Dina Titus and Rep. Steven Horsford, and Rep. Ro Khanna, California.

The National Student Leadership Academy (NSLA) is a capstone leadership experience for JAG Career Association state officers and local chapter leaders, providing unique experiences through experiential learning, real-world applicability, and networking.

Returning Specialist restores Spanish Springs program

Please join us as we welcome back JAG Nevada Specialist Sara Howard to the Spanish Springs program in Sparks, Nevada.

We are very pleased to have Sara returning full-time to JAG Nevada. She previously led the program at Reed High School beginning in 2018 and was working as a long-term substitute when the opportunity to take the helm at Spanish Springs became available. Program Manager Kristel-Ann Galarce shared her thoughts on Sara’s return.

“We are so fortunate to have Sara back as a JAG Program Specialist! Sara brings back years of experience, wisdom, and genuine compassion into the classroom and organization. She has proven to be an incredible mentor and contributor to our team, always supporting our members and sharing her knowledge and ideas! She is invaluable to the organization. Sara – I hope you feel the same support you have always given us. Welcome back!”

Partner Spotlight: Mining the Future with Kinross Round Mountain

The JAG Nevada program at Round Mountain High School thrives thanks to the generosity and unwavering support of our partner, Kinross Gold. We are deeply grateful for the investment Kinross employees and leadership have made in our program over the past nine years.

Kinross Round Mountain not only sponsors the specialist who ensures the program remains strong, but their employees play an active role in events like the annual Career Development Conference. They visit our classrooms to share their personal career stories with students, offering valuable insights and inspiration. Through the Maintenace Training Cooperative scholarships, many of our graduates discover career paths within the mining industry, following in the footsteps of their mentors. These connections lead them to careers that create lasting prosperity for themselves and their families. Thank you to the team at Kinross Gold for the generous support we receive for JAG Nevada.

Volunteer opportunities coming this Spring. Stay tuned for details on our Career Development Conference in April 2025.
